A Blast from the Past

My stitching style has changed a lot in the years since I began stitching. I don't even have most of the things I stitched back when I was a teenager or early adulthood. I gave them away or did God knows what with them. I do have a piece that I stitched almost 19 1/2 years ago to celebrate Rob and I getting married. I wouldn't stitch this today but I loved it then. Do you have an old piece hanging around that even though your style has changed, you keep around for sentimental reasons? I think now I'm stitching pieces that will stand the test of time (not all of course, some you just gotta do for fun) but the samplers and more traditional things I think, I will love forever.

This is a Charles Wysoki pattern for which I've long forgotten the name. Sorry for the glare - this was before I started using museum glass!

This is a glove mold that my dear, Aunt Katheryn sent me. I love it. Her daughter Paige had given me one but my Rob broke it, not too long ago. Oh, you can tell it's a hand but the finger that remains does not make the prettiest of pictures. Rob went on the hunt to find me another one and, he found one on ebay. It was such a deal that he got two for the price of one! Well, no wonder - the mold must have belonged to an amazon woman and her mate 'cause they were huge! That alone wouldn't be so bad but the hands were only glazed 1/2 way up. Unglazed porcelain gives me the willies! They weren't pretty. My mom mentioned to my aunt that mine had broken and she had one that she sent me! This one is a pretty, 6 1/2 size mold and I love it! Thank you Aunt Katheryn! The little piece of stitching is a little fob Julie stitched on paper for me last year.

The 6 1/2 is in front, the others are the two Rob got me.. Check out the wrists on those things! He waited too long to even look at them to return them, bless his heart.

BTW, did you know that if you talk about someone in a not very complimentary manner that if you add "bless his/her heart" that it's okay? Yep, my momma told me so. You've gotta say it in a really sweet, southern voice like she does though. "Why that boy is about as dumb as a rock, bless his heart." Really, it's true. Try it, you'll see. Okay, this is not a license to go be mean. Mean people suck!

This isn't old but it's what I did last night instead of stitching. I covered some cans with pretty scrapbook paper, added some pretty velveteen ric-a-rac and other goodies, put modge podge all over them and viola! I put a piece of cork in the bottom so the can wouldn't be so hard on my scissors or make so much noise. They look great against my red craft room wall.

While I was out yesterday, I bought some new ribbon. I love having pretty ribbon on hand to wrap packages or just to pretty a little something up a bit. I thought these were kind of fun and vintagey looking.

I have been neglecting some of the things I should be stitching (like my Prairie Schooler Year - I am woefully behind) but I have loved working on this little beauty with my SAL friends:

We won't stitch the last line of the verse or the fence at the bottom for another week so I have a bit of time to work on something else. You can check everyone's progress HERE I made a few minor changes - added my boys names, stitched the house in a blue/grey rather than the black and changed the color of the fish so they'd show up a little better, changed some flower stems and maybe a couple of other things, too. I love this and can't wait to have a finish!

Finally, I want to show you a pic of this poor little squirrel. I heard Sophie and Gracie barking like mad the other morning. I went outside and found this poor little guy clinging to our brick for dear life. He was so scared, I had plenty of time to run get the camera. He finally got down to safety!

I hope your week is blessed, not stressed like the little squirrel! Thank you for visiting and thank you for the lovely comments you leave for me. I love reading them and knowing that you were here!

Peace,
Terri

Do you live at Haverford College? Really, I have never seen a black squirrel that wasn't on that campus. Thank you for expanding my horizons.

Anna, there are black squirrels at Princeton too. :D :D

Terri, isn't it funny how our tastes in stitching change? Mine have definitely changed since I started -- all except for the Prairie Schooler designs. I love your hand -- those that your hubbie found for you are big, aren't they? lol! Nice ribbon too! Glad the squirrel made it down! Anna's right, black squirrels are rare -- where DO you live? lol!

Oh, I cringe at some of the things I stitched in the olden days. Did I really think I'd like those things forever?

Love, love your Sail Away.

I had to chuckle when I read the Bless her heart. I guess I needed that reassurance and I used it with thoughts of a southern drawl too. Not usually what I am about but it sure came in as a coincidence. Love the glove forms, they sure would have come in handy for all the gloves I had to make for dance costumes over the years. be always in stitches Terri. ps we have far to many squirles here, black, grey you name it we have it. lol

Hi Terri! Sounds like you have been busy. Those covered cans are adorable with your red room. How funny about the glove forms! We have black and gray squirrels up at our cottage, didn't know there were any down here. Have a great week, Dawn

I love the Sail Away piece. Sometimes I kick myself for not doing the SAL but then the reality is it would've added to my workload stress! Yours is looking great!

Initially when I started stitching in the early 1990's I didn't have much to choose from so it was cutsy stuff for my little toddler. I still have some unfinished stuff on AIDA!

I love the ribbons you bought!

I told my daughter your comment about "bless her/his heart" and she laughed so hard. Thanks for the laugh. I love your hands. I haven't been able to find any in my neck of the woods as I love them too, thanks for reminding me of ebay. I'll have to check there.

I think your blast from the past piece is very pretty, and like you I used to give away everything I stitched. The only things I have left from the beginning is the birth samplers I stitched for each of my daughters.

Sail Away is gorgeous, and I love your ribbons!

At least you did a wedding piece. I still haven't decided 100% on mine.

The cork on the bottom of the can is such a good idea. I remember covering so many pencil holders when I was little. Scrapbooking paper is so much nicer than construction paper. lol

Andrea said...

Oh goodness yes, I stitched so many butt-ugly things back in the 80's...thankfully most of them were given away so I don't have to look at them now, lol! Hey, I will take a picture of a wedding sampler I did for me and DH and show you....ugh, it's so cutesy
80's and on aida as well...but I can't bear to throw it away!
That said, I think your piece is very pretty!
Love those glove molds, very nice!
All of your ribbons are beautiful and I love those cans you did! You're very crafty!
Never seen a black squirrel before here in my part of Texas! Glad your little fella made it down alright... 'less he was in your attic first, then I'd say shoot him, lol!

Good to see you back :) I don´t know how I missed your last blog entry with all those fabulous pictures and updates on what has been happening. Sail Away is looking wonderful.
And a very very belated Happy Birthday!

I really like your Wysocki actually - but, yeah I probably wouldn't stitch that anymore, because there so many other designs I like better. Yes, tastes change, and I wonder sometimes how much we are influenced by what's currently available and/or fashionable.

Great going on the SB, it's beautiful!

Diane (di) said...

Terri, SB is simply gorgeous. Such pretty colors. As for stash from the past. eek! I went through my file cabinet recently looking for a chart and there were some things in there I SWEAR I did not buy. Where did they come from? Did I actually at one time think that I would stitch it? Yeesh. I honestly don't remember drinking that heavily. ;)

My tastes have changed too, but I still love my oldies. Your CW is beautiful. I remember when those designs were very popular.

Love those cool hands. Great way to show off your stitching.

I think that 'bless your heart' thing might work for some, but out of my mouth I suspect it would sound cynical and ridiculous. I don't believe I give off that grandmotherly kindness vibe. But in my head, I can see how it might soften the blow!

Sherry said...

Oh, that poor little squirrel! I have never seen a black one before. How funny about adding "bless his heart" and come to think of it, I hear people doing that alot down south in my home sweet home!

My stitching taste have changed too but like you I have kept a few but I gave away most of it over the years as gifts.

I think I can, I think I can...get caught up on Sail Away :-). I am going to try to get caught up today, what a fun stitch. Yours is gorgeous.

I love your little containers for holding bits and pieces. I really like looking at all the scrapbook paper. What a fun way to use since it I don't not scrap, can't afford another expensive hobby, LOL.

There's no way you could go to a ceramics place and glaze your hands?

OMG, you should see all my Paula Vaughan pieces, my mom has three or four and I have two in my office at work and 5 or so in my guest bedroom. I also have a guardian angel I stitched and a P. Buckley Moss that I did for my DH and I when we got married. And they are all on aida, which I never use anymore.

Hi Terri, love your decorated cans, scrap book paper is great for sooooo many things, I've plenty and don't even scrapbook:) Have a great stitchy day!

Poor little squirrel - I haven't seen a black squirrel since my last visit to MI - they always fascinate me as we just have the plain, ole regular brown ones.

How fun to still have one of your older pieces. I have the first two I ever stitched - one was a teddy bear parade which, thankfully, I never framed. It is tucked in a drawer somewhere and the second I actually have hanging on a wall - it's not too bad, if you don't get too close and see the x's going in different directions.

I love your glove mold - those gargantuan hands are a bit freaky - but Rob gets major points for trying, bless his heart :-)

Us southern women have definitely perfected the art of sounding so sweet and caring while ripping someone to shreds - and blessing them makes it all ok :-) It truly is funny.

Your cans are very fun and chic - love your ribbon too.

What a great post! I loved seeing your "old" design. Yes, I have some of those too. I don't know what to do with them, but I feel like I can't get rid of them just yet. Maybe a hundred years from now they will be coveted pieces. I agree that I'm trying to stitch things now, that I will want for a very long time.

The glove forms were hilarious! Why that poor woman had hands like King Kong, bless her heart! (sappy Southern voice used here!)

As always you brighten my day. Thanks for writing such a great post for us to read!
Have a wonderful day.

I have to use your mother's phrase. I love it. "Why that poor boy fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch along the way, bless his heart!". ROFLOL Usually I just add a "oh gosh, God bless him", but I think "...bless his heart" sounds better. I'll have to try to affect a Southern accent while saying it. LOL

Your SB is coming along SO nicely! I like the changes that you made to personalize it. I admire that in your stitching, the way you weave in your family into most of what you stitch. Pretty cool!

I like your wedding piece, too. I started stitching when my twins were babies--they're 15 now--and I went right into cutesy. I can't bear to throw the stuff out, but it's all packed away so the kids have to deal with it when I pop my clogs.

Your Sail Away is looking so awesome. I don't know how you are managing to keep yourself from finishing up the lastbits. And I LOVE what you did in your craftroom! Covering the cans ad adding ricrac was a great idea!

Gosh, I've never seen a black squirrel. Back home, we only had the gray ones. Here, if you're lucky enough to see one, they're the little red fellas. Awfully cute. :)

My buying tastes have changed over the years, but when I look back on what I've stitched, I think my tastes have remained pretty consistent. One thing about me that's stayed consistent, LOL!.

Hand models. Hmm. I would have to get used to having disembodied hands around, whether they're large & lumpy wristed or dainty. ;)

Hi Terri! Love EVERYTHING on your post! I do have some fun things I stitched on Aida back in the early 90s...ya gotta love it! I gave some as gifts and still see them on occasions in family members' homes. Your hubby is such a GEM to call up ebay to find you something special! (even though they turned out huge...) Love your cans...I think my craft room/office needs such things!

Jan said...

That black squirrel is so cool! Haven't seen to many of those. Your crafted cans are so neat!!!

Yes, my tastes have definitely changed quite alot! I like you, hope that what I am stitching now, will feed my heart and soul for the rest of my life, and live on with my children.

I wonder now if I commented on your last post, I know I read it, but I am thinking I didn't! Anyway, so sorry, just been a hectic couple of weeks. What wonderful pictures!! Love th eones of your parents and of Matt's big day, you must be so proud!!!

Have missed you, glad things are starting to be less hectic for you. And your Sail Away is looking ever so awesome! Congrats for getting caught up!

What a lovely post, Terri and I so enjoyed reading it and admiring all your lovelies...

Your Charles Wysoki finish is so pretty... And like you, I always seemed to be stitching gifts thus I don't have a lot of finished pieces hanging in my own home... I've been trying to change that since I started stitching again in 2003... Not a lot to show for myself as yet... but I'm getting there! :)

I'm so loving stitching Sail Away and yours is gorgeous, Hun! I love your personal touches... I've got a few I want to make as well... And I so need to *catch up* and post a pic... Thankfully, I'm not as far behind with my stitching as I am with my blogging and commenting!

Oh, and the poor wee squirrel... he does indeed look terrified. I'm sure he must have been wishing he was a flying squirrel about then... bless his wee heart! Yes, we do use that saying all the time here in the South... And your Momma is right! And it is also used with heartfelt sincerity when the need arises... :)

Hugs, love and blessings always in stitches...

Oh lord, are there some pieces that I can't believe I stitched. Alma Lynn cutesy bears, etc. There is one piece I did stitch that I still love today and that was Barbara & Cheryl's Sunday Morning. Wall to wall stitching, but when finished it looks so real that I could never part with it. And yee gads, most of those old things were done on Aida fabric too!

And the black squirrel - we've got a few of these around here, but we have a brown one that I think is possessed. He runs around the roof like a demon and then dive bombs onto the deck railing. Scares the bejesus out of you!!

Love those trims - you can do lot of cool things with those. And love those hands too. The things that you can find on Ebay!! And why is there not a picture of the one with the crazy finger! LOL

Cari said...

I would have sworn I commented on your post earlier....my mine must be going somewhere I'm not!! LOL Blast from the Past...gotta love that one. I have several ones done on Aida...much to precious to toss! I'll let my kids do that. You are such a talented lady...the stitching, your room, the cans, the photos.... Girl you GO GO GO! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Terri, I love your post. I did a few wedding samplers in the 80s for gifts and I'm sure they are in peoples attics! I have one I made for my wedding that I still love and will post it soon. It took me awhile to get the hang of posting pix on the blog so I was really putting it off. I have loved your blog for a long time and your "Sail Away " is so inspiring . Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi Terri! :)
I have a couple things that I stitched a couple years ago, that I probably would not even bother to give a second look. haha now it's just a matter of figuring out where I stored them.

Your sail away piece is really pretty. I love the colors. As are the ribbons you've gotten!
And the covered tins are such a great idea! I'm going to add it to my list of must dos.
