A Yuletide Welcome in January

Hello, friends!

I am just back from Florida where I was visiting my folks for a few days.  It was very cool for the Florida area but the sun was shining, the skies were bright and it felt much warmer than the cold 18 degrees it was in Michigan.

Here's my sweet dad using the selfie stick we got him as a stocking stuffer.

Here's my momma outside their favorite breakfast spot.

I got the sampler that my Rob gave me for Christmas, back from the framer.  I stitched it to linen, being careful not to disturb any of the threads or to further damage the areas that were missing.
It is now framed using all conservation materials, with museum glass and spacers and I hope it will now last another 200 years.
Isn't she pretty?

Before I left for Florida, I started work on a Yuletide Welcome by Plum Street Samplers.
I've made decent progress but didn't stitch at all while I was in Florida so am happy to be back home and working on it again.
Here is my progress as of last night:

Love the colors!

I should be able to start on the big house in the next few days.

This is such a fun piece and I'm really enjoying working on it.
It's Christmas but it's subtle.  I really think I could leave it out all year long.
I may have to change the "Yuletide Welcome" to just a field of grass.
Maybe I could add some critters in the grass.
A couple of reindeer, maybe?
A few more peacocks, perhaps?

I'll decide when I get there.

On my trip home from Florida, I had to take the tram from one terminal to the other.
I only carried one bag and it wasn't all that heavy but I did have to schlep it around.
I got on the tram, dropped my bag and held onto the hand rail.
Then it happened.
"Ma'am, please, sit here."
Huh?
A young man (probably in his late teens, early twenties) stood up and asked me to take his seat.
Are you kidding me?
I don't need to sit.  I am perfectly capable of keeping my balance and holding on.
"Keep your seat young man.  I'm fine."
He insisted and was on his feet in a flash and had moved out of the way so I could have his seat.
Really?
Yep, it has finally happened.
I'm now one of the women that folks think they have to give up their seat for.
I could have cried but at the same time I was pleased that such a young man had such nice manners.
There is hope.

Be well my friends and if you're in the path of the storm, stay warm and safe.
Peace,
Terri

Your Yuletide Welcome is looking good, Terri! Lovely pictures of your Dad and Mom! Although you don't look "elderly", it does warm my heart that there are still people (and young ones at that) with manners. Stay warm!

FL does sound good about now. Buried under mountains of snow here in DC and we aren't used to it!

Your preservation of that sampler would make the original stitcher so proud!

Love your new piece. Looks like fun to work on.

I guess ya gotta appreciate chivalry wherever you can find it. If one more of my younger colleagues 'ma'am' s me, I'm going to scream though.

Lovely stitching! Your Dad and Mom look great.

At work I have people older than me calling me "kiddo" or "ma'am". I have no idea how to feel about this.

Looks wonderful, that framed sampler. A piece of art and a piece of history.

Great family pictures, Terri. And so good that you went back to your stitching after returning from Florida. That Yuletide sampler looks really good.

Glad you had a nice time in Florida. I love your framed sampler. You have a wonderful start on the PSS piece. I have not started it yet but have also thought about the Yuletide Welcome section and wondered how to change that. Maybe Winter Welcome? Or my initials and date? I'll figure it out later! LOL so it finally happened to you. I got my first mam' and young people running to open doors several years ago. One day I was a dollar short to buy some snacks at the store. I went to the car to get the dollar and a young girl came running out with a bag yelling "mam, mam I have your bag. I paid the dollar for you" I told her thank you and started to pay her back. She looked horrified and said "Oh NO! I can't take money from you! You remind me too much of my GRANDMA!!!" I smiled, said thank you and after she walked off I told my husband to get me the heck out of there FAST! LOL

Some parents out there raised a fine young man to give his seat to a lady! I think it's a wonderful testimony that there are good and generous people still living, teaching manners! I'm happy it was you that he offered his seat, because there just isn't a nicer person around ;)
I LOVE your sampler that your DH got you for Christmas. IT IS STUNNING!
Yuletide Welcome...I've been thinking about keeping all of my holiday framed pieces up all year long. Currently I take them down with the seasons. But I'm not getting any younger and if I don't hurry up and get a wall of samplers...I think it'll be a wall of "the year" :)

I think it's only good manners when a man gives his seat up for a lady, nothing to do with how old the lady is, it's how it should be. I will admit to getting a bit miffed if I have to stand while a man is sitting lol.

Love the sampler that your Dh bought you, and your stitching too 😁

What a nice time you had with your parents in Florida! Don't feel badly about having a young man giving up his seat for you! It's nice to know there are still a few well mannered young people out there!

Your "gift" sampler looks so pretty in that frame. What a wonderful picture of your mom and dad. So nice that you were able to spend time with them in Florida. I would just think of what a well mannered young man you ran into. The glass is half full.

What's that white stuff in the background? Ha! :)

I love the sampler your husband got you. It's gorgeous. The framing you chose suits it perfectly too.

Obviously that young man was raised to be a true southern gentleman!

Your antique sampler looks fantastic in its new frame -- good for you for taking care of it so well. Love your Yuletide Welcome too! Mine stays up all year round despite the theme. lol about the young man! I would just think about it as southern charm -- and gentlemanly politeness. :D

I would be more pleased that someone actually had manners to let a woman - any aged woman take their seat. BRAVO young man ! Don't be sad Ter - you look like a million bucks ! I'm glad you enjoyed your FL visit - I wish your folks weren't so far from me - I'm so regretful I missed the opp to meet you and your mom in savannah a few years ago. Take care and enjoy your Yuletide - it's lovely !
Mel PS - your little antique sampler is really pretty too - lucky gal !

Love your newest sampler, it looks great. I hope you have a wonderful week!

Love your vintage sampler from Rob. So...you stitched it to a piece of linen yourself? That's awesome. I had one conserved a while back and paid too much to have it done. I think my next one I'll be brave and do it myself. I bought one off eBay several years ago, it wasn't very much $$ but in pretty bad shape. I'm thinking to match the fabrics to as close as I can and give it a whirl! Why not!!
Sounds like all is well with your parents?? Glad you could go for a little visit. And the young man that gave up his seat...WOW...he's certainly got his head on straight! Always love hearing from you! XOXO

And just when I am about to give up hope on the next generation you share this wonderful story. I do want to believe there are still parents who teach their children manners. Your sampler is beautiful!

Hi Terri, I so much love you stitchings. Yultide Welcome looks amazing and I agree, it will be a work that you can leave out all year.
I had to smile about your "Take the sit, Ma'am" - story .... polite and well-behaved words that scare women all around the world haha!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Beautiful stitching as always. I love the colors. Maybe just leave the welcome but I think with those colors you could leave it out all year and if it makes you happy stitch it as is and still leave it out all year long. Have a great weekend.
