A Treasure Day

This has been a good weekend! I have LOTS to show you but the main reason yesterday was a "Treasure Day" was because my Rob and I got to spend the day together. We drove out along the St. Clair River, and Lake St. Clair itself to hit a few of my favorite antique haunts. Rob is always hoping he'll score that rare baseball card, picture or other treasure but truth be told, he doesn't usually find much. Like I am with him, I think he's just happy to spend time with me. I'm blessed!

Anyway, while we were out and about we found a new to me consignment shop that I just loved. It's in New Baltimore, MI and they just had the greatest stuff. It's called Ditto.... Consignments and I took a few shots in the store (with permission). But first, I have to show you what I found! The minute I saw her, I knew she was coming home with me. Here's where she's currently hanging:

I was not at all sure it was old or an antique but the shop owners said that they thought it was. Doesn't really matter to me - I Love it! Perfect for a lover of samplers, dontcha think?
Here are a few pics of the inside of the shop - I can't wait to go back!

Look closely and you can see how much Rob was enjoying our outing. He's playing Scrabble on his phone....

It was cold yesterday, as it is today, and this is what Lake St. Clair looked like:

Can you see all the ice? Click on the picture to enlarge. The ice is melting but not gone yet!

Rob and I had a lovely lunch on the river and the waitress snapped this shot of us:

And here are some pics of the view from our table:

Are you bored yet? I have more to show you. I found this quilt at an antique store like the angel, (not at Goodwill or SA so it wasn't the cheap bargain I usually go for but it wasn't bad):
It is a state flower quilt that is embroidered and hand quilted. I just love it! It's not perfect, you can see where some of the colors have stained the fabric but I love that some of the flowers are appliqued and all the state flowers are labeled. I can't find an Alaska or Hawaii flower so I'm guessing it's at least prior to 1959 but I really have no idea how old it might be - I'm guessing 1940's. States are also duplicated so I am just not sure... It reminded me of one my mom gave me that has the 50 state birds that a woman in Tennessee hand quilted for her. I'll show you that another time - it's on my bed right now. Any recommendations on the best way to clean this would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a little "trash to treasure" something I made from a salt and pepper set I found. It was missing the stand that they originally hung on so I thought they'd make great necklaces. My own little, "message in a bottle" necklace. I put a small scroll inside, wrapped in floss and added some doll buttons in pink, white and gold. The scroll says:
Faith
Hope
Peace
Love
Rob ~ Matt ~ Ty
Don't you think keeping a wish close to your heart makes sense?

Okay, this is the last thing.... I promise. I found this chair at the SA for $49.99. I've been looking for a new chair for my craft room, er studio, and thought this fit the bill perfectly! Not only is it a diminutive size (which I need with low ceilings), but it rocks! Great for reading, stitching, watching t.v. or just chilling out in my room. I haven't decided yet whether to paint it or leave it be but it will definitely be reupholstered. I love that it rocks and I don't have to worry about it scooting all over the room. Now to find the perfect fabric!

I believe the old, red, velvet may be the original fabric - see it peaking through?

And in closing, I'd like to say WhooHoo - I just passed 200 chocolate loving followers! I think a giveaway might be in order to celebrate my wonderful followers! What do you all think? Maybe some stitchy stash or a message in a bottle necklace - Hmmmm... I'll have to think on it a bit.

Have a great day - a great week and thanks so much for stopping by! I love reading all your comments and I couldn't appreciate them more. I'll have a more "stitchy" update on my next post along with whatever I decide a giveaway should be!

Peace,
Terri

How lovely that you got to spend time with your DH -- he's a good looking man! I loooove that angel you found, and the quilt! Wow! Great great finds! I'm not the one to ask about cleaning old quilts though. Not a clue! lol! I should learn since I have a couple myself. That chair was a great find too! I love rocking chairs. :D And your message in a bottle -- so sweet! I love it! Happy 200 followers! :D

I love days like that! Days that my husband and I ramble around together.
The angel is very nice. I have something similar hanging above a mirror in my bathroom. I can't wait to see the fabric that you pic out for the chair. What a nice find.

What great findings you got! I never seem to hit it right when I go to places like that. I keep trying though. I really like that chair you found.

Oh my gosh, Terri!! I love love love that angel. It's one of those 'grab this and pay for it and run out the door before somebody else sees how great it is' type of finds. YGG! Love the quilt, too--what a treasure. I wish we had those sorts of shops here!

Great haul! That is almost certainly the original velvet under there. I think the wood may have been refinished at some point though. But I like the lighter finish. :)

What a haul!!! Love it all. The angel is so cute. The chair is wonderful, can't wait to see how you add to it. The quilt is beautiful. No help on cleaning it. I found a table cloth at a garage sale that I still haven't used because I am not sure how to get the stains out with out destroying it. Lovely day.

Oh Terri! What a wonderful day with you cute hubby! You both make the prefect couple!
I don't know where to begin. I love the angel! Wow, she is special, and the perfect accent for a sampler wall.
Also love your message in a bottle necklace. Such a unique and clever idea! Love it!
Now the chair is just about perfect. I can't wait to see how you reupholster it! It is going to to look wonderful in your sewing room. Are you attempting to do that yourself?
The quilt it a treasure indeed! The time it took to make...I can't even imagine! I would definitely hand wash in the tub with very gentle detergent, and then hang to dry. I guess you could dry clean it too, if you are worried about the other threads running.
What a fun post. You are a special friend! I am so grateful for you. I'm still reeling over you know what :D. Have a wonderful day! I am going to be stitching on a little friendship sampler. Many Hugs to you!

What a fabulous day (date) you two had!!!! And even better you found some perfect treasures, too!!! I love to "hunt" for fun finds...it's such a thrill isn't it!? Anywhoooo, I love your angel and that rocking chair....let's just say that someday it will make the perfect "Grandma" chair!! Something fun to look forward to, right!!!! Now, about your beautiful quilt. Does it have any stains on it? Have you ever heard of "Grandma's Spot Remover"? It works miracles on just about everything. Doilys, pasta sauce stains on white clothing....let me know if you haven't seen it and I will send you a bottle. And finally, what a fun and creative necklace you made, love it!

Teri, I totally understand about the husband looking for that rare baseball card. I'm married to one of those, too. The day he discovered that people actually sold baseball card on ebay was a red letter day for him (not a good one for our credit cards! LOL!). All of your finds look great. I loved the chaiar. It looks so comfy.

Deb said...

Great finds Terri! I too went treasure hunting this past week and came up with some goodies. Love a good hunt! Looks like a wonderful day together, but I do have to laugh at Rob playing solitare while waiting! LOL Wonderful quilt too! And the chair! Can't wait to see what you do with it.

About the quilt, there should be something on the internet about cleaning it - I know I've read something somewhere about how to do it. Perhaps that woman at Guild (whose name I always forget) who gets into conservation can give you some tips. I think I've read about laying it out in a bathtub with quilt cleaner and then laying it outside (hopefully birds don't go over). The less strain on an older quilt the better.

And I'm thinking of a giveaway too - it's always fun to share the treasures!

Eileen said...

Nice quilt. Unless it is really dirty I wouldn't bother to wash. If it just has an odor then just put it outside on a nice day. I picked up a quilt from 1913 at a garage sale yrs ago and have never bothered to wash. (I'm JJ's sis mil)

Kim said...

Ooooh love the cherub, Terri! And the rocker...fab! Can't wait to see what fabric you pick for that! The quilt is great!! If I were to wash it, I'd use Orvus and the bathtub and lay it out on a sheet to dry outside....away from trees with birds waiting to drop a load. ;o)

What a cute couple you and your hubby make. I think it's lovely that you enjoy each others company and share quality time together.

You've found some gems there, as usual. I bet you wonder what you'll come back with whenever you go out hunting for treasures?

Well done on your milestone of followers too!

Sherry said...

Oh, I love the angel! Just perfect on your stitching wall! The quilt is beautiful. I am not sure about cleaning. The dry cleaners ruined a bunch of my aunt's quilts long ago. You may want to use cold water, a delicate wash cycle and a delicate detergent like Woolite. Maybe a little Spray n Wash would help the color run. Just an idea. I am no expert but I do know washing in hot will set that stain. Lucky you finding all these goodies! The chair looks so comfy too! Congratulations on your new follower number!

Oh my goodness Terri - so many wonderful things, I don't know where to begin.

I love the picture of you and Rob -you both look so happy and the picture of him playing scrabble while you browse made me laugh. It sounds like you two had a wonderful day.

Your angel is great, what a wonderful find! And that rocking chair is just beautiful - I love all the decorative woodwork. I look forward to seeing what fabric you choose to cover the chair.

The quilt is a great find as well. I have always been told that Biz is the best thing to use for vintage linens. Let me know what you find works best.

You are so creative, what a wonderful idea to create a 'message in the bottle' necklace and with old salt & pepper shakers - amazing! I love the sentiment behind the idea.

Congrats on 200 followers, it's definitely a testament to what a wonderful and talented person you are. Your blog is always so delightful to visit and each entry makes me feel like I know you a little better.

Enjoy your day.

You and Rob had a great day out together even if he did play Scrabble on his phone! I love the cherub and it is in exactly the perfect place. And your chair! What a great find that is and I think, if it didn't clash with your room, I would recover it with the Red Velvet it was originally done in. And no I haven't read any of the rest of the comments here so maybe somebody else has suggested that too.

Okay I tried leaving a message and it didn't take so here I go again!

This is my first attempt at blogging and it's not boding well.

I fell in love with your Eliazbeth Savilles sampler and wanted to stitch it using your color substitutions. I'm confused about the 'taupe'. The instructions call for Weeping Willow (+) but I can't figure out what you substituted for it.

I hope you don't mind my copying; they do say that imitation is the highest form of flattery :D

Cheers, Cheryl

The cherub is gorgeous, love your sampler wall, too.
